Welcome to 8th grade Language Arts. This year is very important to our students in that it is a TAKS year where they must pass in order to go on to the next grade. We are and will be presenting many skills and strategies as well as practice in vocabulary and reading. Literary terms and devices are a big part of the curriculum this year so we will be concentrating on how they enhance literature of all types. Please, check with your child to see what we are doing in class, feel free to call the school and ask me any questions you may have about your child's education.
This second nine weeks focus will be on analyzing plot, setting, and problem resolution. We will continue to focus on style, tone, mood, and suspense as they effect the text. Our second unit in the literature text will be about studying the strange and mysterious. The stories we will cover until the first quarter is finished are:
1. The Landlady
2. The Tell-Tale Heart
3. There Will Come Soft Rains
4. The Black Cat
5. The Veldt
6. The Girl in the Lavender Dress
The grading scale is as follows: daily grades 20%
quizzes or special projects 30%
major tests 50%
Supplies students should have each day: paper, pencil, library book ( if a student owes a fine or owes for a lost book, please take care of this as soon as possible so the student may check out books), planner (for leaving class and for daily assignments and notes from the teacher to be written in)
If a student is absent he/she has as many days to make up the work as he/she was absent. If the absence is for an extended period of time the office should be notified.
Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your child's life as he or she gets ready to enter high school. This is a very important and exciting time.
