Kindergarteners are expected to be reading at a DRA Level 3 going into first grade. I will work with your child in guided reading groups, on phonemic awareness activities, and in shared reading experiences to help them to become readers. I will send home readers as the year progresses. Kindergarteners need much support at home to be successful. Here are some tips for reading with your child. We recommend reading daily with and to your child. Skills to focus on: *Tracking print left to right and word by word *One to one matching *Using picture clues *Applying letter and sound knowledge in context *Activating prior knowledge *Recognizing and reading sight words *Predicting and inferring *Attending to concepts of print (spacing, capitalization, punctuation) *Retelling a story with sequence and story elements (characters, setting, beginning, middle, end) *Self correcting *Reading cues |
