Hauke History

The school was created in 1974, and was initially known as "The Guidance and Placement Center" and served thirty students. It had two academic teachers and four vocational teachers. The school's name eventually evolved into "Operation Involvement" (O.I.). The purpose of the school was to serve students who were at critical risk of dropping out of school. It offered smaller, more personalized environments for students who did not do well in a large traditional high school.

Over the years, the school grew to serve approximately fifty students per year. It had several administrators. Larry Hauke was acting principal when he passed away suddenly in 1986. He was so loved and respected by the staff, students, and CISD administration, that the school name was changed to "W.L. Hauke Academic Alternative High School".

As CISD grew, the need to enlarge the alternative school became obvious. As new schools were built to replace ever growing student populations, Travis Jr. High School became the site of Hauke Alternative School in 1995. With a larger facility, the school was able to serve more students and offer more options to keep students in school. Hauke currently serves students from all CISD junior highs and high schools. The school is now located at 701 North Third Street, in the old Crockett building. The goal of the school is to still offer a variety of programs to meet the academic needs of the criticaly at-risk students who need flexibility in order to complete their high school career.
