The Library of Alexandria in ancient Egypt was the first to be systematically catalogued by its ingenious librarian, Callimachus. Collection development was accelerated by Ptolemy III who requested books from the world's sovereigns and from all ships that entered the harbor so that copies could be made. The copies were returned to their owners, while the library nefariously retained the originals.

Selecting materials in libraries of the new millennium offers its own challenge.  How can patrons sift through the myriad of print and electronic information choices available,  and locate the most appropriate information for their needs?
