The Library of Alexandria in ancient Egypt was the first to be systematically catalogued by its ingenious librarian, Callimachus. Collection development was accelerated by Ptolemy III who requested books from the world's sovereigns and from all ships that entered the harbor so that copies could be made. The copies were returned to their owners, while the library nefariously retained the originals. |
