Familiarize yourself with the library's online card catalog.

Decide how you want to search: title, author, subject, keyword
Avoid using articles: a, an, the
Spell your words correctly. Some card catalog systems
will not locate misspelled topics.
Look for synonyms for your topic.


Once you have located items in the card catalog:

Write down the full call numbers. A complete call number includes the letters following the numbers. For example:

932 MUL

If two books have the same numbers, but different letters, the letters are shelved alphabetically. For example, 932 MUL will be placed ahead of 932 WOM.

Books with the same call numbers will be found in both reference and non-fiction. Call numbers preceded by an R will be shelved in the Reference section. For example:

932 MUL non-fiction
R932 MUL reference
