Athletic Handbook
Peet Mission Statement:
Peet athletics is a two-year program to develop a strong foundation for those individuals who wish to pursue an athletic career at Conroe High School. For the high school programs to be successful, there must be a strong foundation of character and integrity from those who are involved.
A solid foundation of character is the basis of being the best person and best athlete you can be. The most significant parts of the foundation are the cornerstones of belief and unity.
Belief- Most programs fail because athletes do not believe in it. They feel that something else will work better. If athletes do not believe in the program, they will not be motivated to put full intensity into their workouts.
Resolve- To have resolve, you must first develop a mission of what you want to achieve. It is based on correct principles that are fundamental guidelines of how you conduct and govern yourself.
Resolve entails the process of preparation and properly conditioning yourself. The process incorporates objectives, procedures, timetables, daily practices, and work out schedules.
Discipline- Discipline means following through on your commitment to the mission and plan. Discipline is doing the right thing at the right time.
Courage- Courage enables one to face a difficult situation or problem head on. You must do what you believe is right and not give in to what is the popular view of others.
Perseverance- Often success doesn’t go to the swiftest, but rather the one who is the most persistent and determined.
Unity- Unity is putting your teammates first and yourself second. The success of the team depends on you doing your part. Each athlete has a role to play that contributes to the overall success of the team. A team that has good unity has synergism. Synergism means the whole is greater that the sum of its parts.
Absolutes:
An Absolute is for ALL athletes, at ALL times, at ALL places while attending and representing PEET JUNIOR HIGH. (NO EXCEPTIONS)
1. Athletes are to be at practices, scheduled meetings, and game performances on time (Be On Time)
2. Athletes are expected to be on time to their academic classes. (NO TARDIES)
3. Athletes are expected to maintain a passing grade. (70 or above)
4. Academic negligence is unacceptable. (Not turning in assignments, truancy, and not taking the opportunity to retest when given)
5. Theft will not be tolerated. (If it is not yours, don’t take it)
6. Cheating and not being truthful will not be tolerated.
7. Athletes will be respectful to anyone in an authoritative position.
8. Athletes are to respect others at all times. (Treat people like you want to be treated)
These absolutes are ethical and moral choices that will be made by our athletes everyday, regardless of individual opinions.
We make choices everyday! Some are right, some are wrong. When athletes make a wrong choice it is by their CHOICE; therefore, there will be a consequence. When a wrong choice is made, it is usually for instant gratification, without realizing the long-term effect it will have. Making the right choice may not benefit the individual until later.
Right from Wrong:
If you know it is Right, DO IT
If you know it is Wrong, DON’T DO IT
If you’re not sure it is Right or Wrong, DON’T DO IT
If you’re not sure, ASK someone in an authoritative position
Our disciplinary procedure is character based. We direct the wrong decision making back to character.
Our Level 1 disciplinary program is OPPORTUNTIY FOR IMPROVEMNET (OFI)
This is done before or after practice at the coach’s discretion.
Our Level 2 discipline program is a character-based packet, to be completed by the next practice. Failure to turn this in is another wrong choice and will result in further consequences. Level 2 is anyone that is placed in ISS, OSS or RA.
* Athletics is a privilege, not a right. Therefore, individuals participating in athletics are held accountable to a higher standard. This is to enhance the character and integrity of our athletic program. There are certain procedures and guidelines set forth for our athletes. If individuals cannot adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Peet athletic program, they may wish to choose another extra curricular activity at Peet Junior High.
Teamwork:
Every player will be given an equal opportunity to participate. This does not mean equal playing time. Every player who participates in practices and displays a positive attitude will be given an opportunity to play. It is our position to be competitive, but not win at all cost. Everyone is a part of the team and will have a responsibility to the team. No individual is above his team or teammates. Our decision-making is honest and fair and is based on what is best for the team and not the individual.
Athletic Requirements:
* A physical, travel card, birth certificate, and $15.00 athletic fee must be on file to participate.
Workout Schedule:
All schedules are carefully planned, but may be revised if necessary. A monthly workout schedule will be sent home.
7th Boys and Girls athletics will be in the morning and during 1st period. Starting times may vary for each sport. (See practice schedule)
8th Boys and Girls athletics practice will be in the afternoon during 5th period and after school. Ending practice time will vary with each sport. (See practice schedules)
Absences From Practice:
Please notify the coaching staff if you are going to be absent. 936-709-3700
Unexcused Absences:
Any player with an unexcused absence will be suspended for the next game. On the second unexcused absence, the player will be suspended for two games. On the third unexcused absence, the player will be removed from the team. An unexcused absence is being in school and not coming to practice, unless approved by the head coach of that sport on the day of such absence. If you are going to check out during the day, let us know.
Tardies:
All students, including athletes, must be on time to practice. The locker room will be locked at 7:25am and 3:20pm to secure and insure the athletes that their property is safe. No one will be allowed to re-enter the lockeroom until practice is over. If you have to leave early, make arrangements to have your things with you ahead of time.
Dress:
Each athlete will be issued practice clothes and seasonal athletic equipment. If a boy/girl does not have his/her issued clothes, he/she will be assigned a consequence. At the end of each season, the players will return the issued uniforms/equipment. If any item is not returned, the player is responsible to pay for the lost item.
Discipline:
All athletes are expected to display an appropriate behavior at all times. Any disrespect toward an authoritative figure and any disruption that affects the safety or learning environment of any other student will not be tolerated. Disciplinary action will be taken.
ASD (After School Detention):
Any player assigned an administrative ASD will be suspended for one game, however, the student may request Saturday School from their grade level principal to replace an ASD assignment in order to be eligible for participation that week. The first assignment will be on the Saturday immediately following the ASD assignment (no exceptions) from 8am-10am. Further requests for replacement ASD (2, 3, 4…) will be from 8am-12pm.
Saturday School:
Any player assigned an administrative Saturday school will be suspended for one game.
ISS (IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION):
Anyone placed in ISS will not be allowed to practice and will be suspended for 2 games. He/she will also be required to complete the Athletic Character Packet before being allowed to return to athletics. Players who are placed in ISS for the second time will be removed from the team. A third placement and players WILL BE REMOVED from athletics.
OSS/DAEP:
Anyone placed in DAEP will be removed from the team. A second DAEP assignment will result in removal from athletics.
Academics:
Students are expected to maintain a passing grade (70). Anyone failing at the end of the first 6/9 weeks becomes ineligible by UIL guidelines. It is expected that players will continue to be at practice during their three weeks of ineligibility. Athletes can become eligible at the end of the 3-week grading period if they are passing all classes.
