What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader is a motivational reading program that encourages students to read books from the classroom, library, or home. If a book that they read has an AR quiz/test on our school's AR list, the student may take a computerized quiz/test on that book.  Depending on the number of questions that they answer correctly, the student will earn points.  The computer keeps track of how many points they have earned during the school year.  Students may only take the test on a book title once during their entire stay at Powell. The computer remembers each book that has been tested on for each student and transfers it from one school year to the next.

What are AR prizes?
Students receive motivational prizes for the points they earn each time they reach the next point level for their grade level.
The bulletin board in the hallway opposite the library celebrates the students who have earned points with AR testing.

How do I know if a book is an AR book when I'm in the library?
Books at Powell that have AR quizzes have a colored dot sticker on the spine.  On the back cover of the book you can find a sticker that shows the Reading Level (RL) and Point Value (PV) of that book.

Where can a student take an AR quiz?
They may take the quiz on a computer in their classroom or in the library.

When can a student take an AR quiz?
Each teacher has special guidelines and times allowed for students taking quizzes during class time.  Students may also take quizes during their library time, after the lesson and if they have already checked out their books.

What reading level of AR books should my child be reading?
Please check with your child’s teacher to find out his/her current AR reading range.
For example: from reading level 2.0 to 2.4.
The numbers after the points designate the month of the school year, so 2.4 means the fourth month of second grade.
