History of Neil A. Armstrong Elementary

Our school was under construction, but not yet named when Apollo 11 rocketed to the moon. On July 20, 1969, Neil A. Armstrong stepped from the lunar landing module, The Eagle, to the surface of the moon.

Millions of people around the world watched as he made the historic footstep on the moon. The new principal Mr. Albert Moorhead thought the new round school should be named after the astronaut. The CISD school board approved the name and Armstrong School was born.

The new round school featured a dome over the central activity center, the library, music and art rooms. The classrooms were group down each hall. Many people in Conroe thought the school looked like a 'space ship' when they toured the new school. Armstrong's picture and those of the moon landing have hung on the entrance hall of the school since the dedication.
