What is the Accelerated Reader Program?

The Accelerated Reader Program allows the student to challenge and push themselves to the next level of reading.  At the beginning of the year, each student takes "The S.T.A.R. Test."   The S.T.A.R. test results tell the student and teachers what reading level is best for them.  Our books are color coded so that the students can check out a book on their reading level.

After reading their book, students will take a test at their classroom computer or in the library.  The AR test has 5 to 20 questions about the book's character, story, and details.  If they pass the test, they are given points for completion of the book and the score. When a student has read and tested at his level independently, his teacher will allow him to progress to the next reading level.

Armstrong library has over 8000 tests for the students and we order tests for the new books purchased during the year.  The program is designed to significantly improve student reading achievement and increase the joy of learning.  The AR program is used by more than 40,000 schools nationwide.

We have a binder at the Montgomery County Library with the list of tests for Armstrong Elementary to help parents select books from that library.  We also have binders in our library.  We encourage parents to visit our library and to see first hand our motivated students.
