MAKING LINKS

There are 5 types of links:

External Linka link from a webpage you made to a page on the Internet that you did not make. Internal Links – a link from a webpage you made to another webpage that you made.

Anchor Link – a link to another spot on the same page.

Email Link- a link that, when clicked by a user, opens their email program, and opens a new message that will contain your email address in the To: line.

External Links

Easy Way:

Type the URL (web address) of the website in the body of the webpage, including the www at the beginning. Then press Enter. NOTE: The link will not have the appearance of a live link, but when it is viewed on the web, it will be blue or purple and underlined.

EXAMPLE

Using this method, your link would appear like this on your webpage:

www.archives.gov/research room/research topics/world war 2 photos/world war 2photos.html

Better Way:

1.  Type a title for the website in the text of your webpage.

2. Highlight the title.

3. Click the Hyperlink icon, or right click and choose Make Link.

4. Type (or paste) the URL in the Target URL box.

5. Click the dropdown arrow by the Window box.

6. Select Use Same Window.

7.  Click OK.

NOTE: The link will display the link icon to the left of the text, but when it is viewed on the web, the icon will not appear.

EXAMPLE

Using this method, your link would appear like this on your webpage: World War II Photos

Internal Links

To make an internal link, you must use the Better Way method as shown above.

1. Type the name of your file that you are linking to.

(The text that you type does not have to exactly match the name of the file you’re linking to. I can use the text “Mrs. Rich’s Syllabus” to link to the file named syllabus.)

2. Highlight the text you typed.

3. Click the Hyperlink icon, or right click on the text and choose Make Link.

4. In the Target URL box, type the exact name of the file you are linking to. (If you are linking to the syllabus file, you must type the word syllabus, or whatever you named the file.)

 5. Click OK.

NOTE: The link will not work unless you have first created and saved the page to which you are linking.

Graphic Links

Use the Better Way method for either internal or external links, just right click on the graphic and choose Make Link from the pop-up menu.

Anchor Links

Anchor links work well if you have a single webpage with lots of information on it.  You can type in an index at the top, then link to different spots down the page.  This method is used for the FC EZ Webpage templates.

1.   Type in the index at the top, and all the text below.

2.   Highlight a key word in the text below that you want to LINK TO.

3.   Click the Insert drop down menu on the tool bar and choose Marker.

4.     In the Format Marker window, type in the key word that is the anchor.  Click OK.

5.        Insert Markers at each section of the text that you plan to link to.

6.        At the top of the page, highlight the index word that will link to an anchor marker below.  Right click on the text and select Make Link.  This time, in the format link window, click on the Marker button.  Choose the name of the anchor link you created earlier, and it will appear in the Target URL window with a # in front of the link name.  This indicates it is linking to an anchor link, or marker link, on the same page.

7.        Repeat for each index title you have at the top of the page that will link to a marker farther down on the page.

8.        You can also create links at end of each section that link to an anchor marker back at the top of the page.  This takes the browser back to the top quickly and easily, without having to use the “back” button on the web browser.

Email Links

Easy Way:

Type the complete email address. Then press Enter.

NOTE: The email link will not have the appearance of a live link, but when it is viewed on the web, it will be blue or purple and underlined.

EXAMPLE

Using this method, your email link would appear like this on your webpage: jrobin@conroe.isd.tenet.edu

Better Way:

1. Type some text that indicates an email link (Contact Me, Email Me, etc.)

2. Highlight the text.

3. Click the Hyperlink icon.

4. In the Target URL box, type mailto: followed by the entire email address. (EXAMPLE: mailto:jrobin@conroe.isd.tenet.edu)

5. Click OK.

EXAMPLE

Using this method, your email link would appear like this on your webpage: Contact Me
