Materials: a variety of books

Purpose: To develop readers who select and read books independently.

How it looks: Children self-select books for free-choice silent reading. Kindergarten and first graders read softly to themselves or friends, while older children will be able to read silently. More proficient readers will be able to keep a record of books they have read.
