Materials: magnetic letters, alphabet letters, ABC books, cookie tray/magnetic board, and variety of letter/picture cards

Purpose: To reinforce letter/sound connections and to encourage spelling of familiar words. However, the purpose of this center changes based on the learner(s) and also what the teacher has modeled in large group instruction.

How it looks: Children manipulate magnetic letters to increase understanding of letter-sound connections. Beginning letters can be matched to pictures, upper and lower case letters can be matched, familiar words can be spelled, and ABC books can be read.
