TEKS

Committed to Excellence

What Are the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills)?

  • State mandated curriculum
  • Based on "real life" problem-solving
  • Build the foundation necessary for students to succeed in advanced math and science courses later in their careers
  • Mathematics TEKS for kindergarten through 8th grade contain six curriculum strands
What are the TEKS strands?
  • Number, operation, and quantitative reasoning
  • Patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking
  • Geometry and spatial reasoning
  • Measurement
  • Probability and statistics
  • Processes and tools used in problem-solving
What is the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills)?
  • Grade level assessments, in third grade through exit level, designed to test student mastery of the TEKS.
How are TEKS and TAKS related?
  • TAKS assessment objectives are closely aligned with the six strands identified in the TEKS curriculum
  • The TEKS student expectations assessed under each TAKS objective are vertically aligned and build logically from one grade level to the next
