1st Semester:
Spelling practice- Practice the unit words and the rhyming vowel pattern words that accompany the weekly list. In addition the workbook pages should be completed for each unit. These provide a daily practice of the words along with other objectives being covered at school.

Math Fast Facts: These pages will come home Monday-Thursday. Two fact sheets a week will cover addition sums to18 and two will cover subtraction. These will be turned into me at the beginning of  math time. Each week students will be given an addition and subtraction timed test (5 minutes). If students are not doing well on weekly tests, please work on these at home until math facts are mastered.

Reading: Reading practice should be at least 20 minutes a night with discussion about what has been read. Since students are graded on how well they read out loud, some oral reading should be included on a weekly basis.

2nd Semester:
Brain Booster Packet: A "Brain Booster" packet will come home each Friday beginning in Febraury. Each Friday either a reading packet or a composition assignment will come home in your child's White binder. The stories will be non-fiction with questions. When reading through these passages the children should read through completely once. Then as they are searching for the answer they should highlight or underline the text where they found the answer. Some answers are implied and may not be something they can highlight. These assignments should be done independently, however, parents should go over the assignment to check for any corrections that may be needed. For the writing assignment that will come home every other Friday the children should do some sort of pre-write.  In class we call it a graphic organizer, a web, or an outline. The actual writing should be in their best handwriting so some kids may have to do a rough draft and then a final copy.  The story should be at least a page in length.  We are focusing on beginning to use paragraphs in class. This "Brain Booster"assignment is in addition to the spelling, math fast facts, and reading required the first semester.  The asignmnet is due the following Friday.
